What is a drum circle? In the most basic form, it is any group of people playing (usually) hand-drums and percussion in a circle. They are distinct from a drumming group or troupe in that the drum circle is an end in itself rather than preparation for a performance. They can range in size from a handful of players to circles with thousands of participants. The idea of a drum circle is to connect to each other through the "heart" beat. It is a very powerful experience when two or more people drum to a beat. It grows and "comes alive". It is very rejuvenating and invigorating. It is a healing experience.
Jorge Perez-Albela will be offering a facilitated drum circle. In this form of group drumming, a person helps to focus the intent and improve the quality and effect of the activity, making it easier for people to effectively participate.
It helps to develop self expression, acceptance and a sense of community. Also team work, since we should listen to each other in order to make it work.
This is not a performance. It is a way of meditating instead. It is not competitive, it is inclusive and welcoming. A great way to connect with each other and to create bonds. Great for families, work peers, friends, etc. It is such a joy that often times we can't help but just smile!
Requirements: Just a desire to drum, learn and enjoy. No skills necessary.
You must bring your own hand drum. Like a conga, Djembe, Bongos or cajon. We could use shakers, bells, etc., but we recommend a skin type of drum.
